Bindu

Bindu:

Interactive VR Installation

June 2016

Quicksand , India

In Indian spirituality Bindu represents the point of creation and unity. Bindu is a VR experiential journey into
the life and art of Sayed Hayder Raza (1922-2016) in the form of an interactive game. Bindu is the first in a series of VR Art experiences which aims at celebrating and curating contemporary Indian art and artists, in an effort to educate and raise awareness.

The game aims to meet the need for inclusive Art education in India.
Bindu takes you on an immersive journey into the artist’s life, not just as a spectator but as an active player.

We started by researching on the life and times of S.H . Raza and his life story compelled us to bring it to a wider audience.  Razas life almost linearly interpolated into his artwork. The three major stages of his life were his childhood in India, mid-life in France and old age in India.

Personal  incidents  from all  stages of his life were highly influential on his artwork.

As a child Raza was very impatient and anxious , this reflected in his progress at school. One day , his teacher sat Raza down and asked him to concentrate on a dot on the blackboard. This incident was all but forgotten  , until one day , when he was a young artist in France and unhappy with his art , he remembered the dot (bindu) and how it had calmed him down.

This was a defining point in Razas life , where he decided to move back to India and focus his art around the dot , or the bindu.

The 3 stages of his life are shown in 3 stages of the game where the first stage is set in old Inida , the viewer has to concentrate on a dot on a board to go to the next level.

The second level is set in france , where Raza's art was very impressionist and had a  heavy construction base. Keeping this in mind, the viewer has to construct a jigsaw-puzzle to ross over to the next level.

At the third level , the Bindu comes to play. The viewer has to complete a painting by Raza , the Bindu to complete the level.

In the fourth and final level , the viewer is completely immersed in a 3-D space that is extrapolated from Razas art.

All through the levels , a voiceover of  Raza is describing his journey in his own words .

We created the artwork in  Cinema4D and the game in Unity. All the music was also composed in-house and reflects the art and location of teh artist.

As a part of the series, we plan to make similar VR experiences on other prominent Indian artists.

Namely Amrita Shergill, Mario Miranda, Jamini Roy and F.N Souza
